A quick update: The fear mentioned in the previous blog was not unfounded (unlike our walls!) and the house continues to batter our already minimal optimism.

We spent a couple of hours one evening digging holes in the kitchen. A fine way to wind down after a full day of work. First, we tried the wall between the kitchen and the garage and were pleasantly surprised to find the wall descended at least 30cm into the ground, giving us a nice amount of room for new floors. But the back wall:
That’s mud. Again. So, either we settle for a kitchen with a 2m or less high ceiling (which may not even be allowed by building control) or we come up with another solution that not only satisfies the need for structural support of this retaining wall, but also allows for suitable damp proofing given the volume of water coming through this wall. We’ll let you know if we manage it.
